Matt Martin is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward who played the majority of his career with the New York Islanders in the NHL. He announced his retirement on June 24, 2025 after 15 regular seasons in the league. He lived during his playing days in the Long Island, New York area while with the Islanders. In November 2023 he was placed on injured reserve due to an upper body injury retroactive to November 15. Over his career Martin played 987 regular season NHL games.

Early Life

Matt Martin was born on May 8, 1989 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. When he was young, he played AA level hockey for the LaSalle Sabres after being cut from a AAA team in his hometown. He later joined the Jr. C Blenheim Blades club for the 2005-06 season. At age 17 he earned a spot as a walk-on with the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Playing career

Matt Martin was drafted in the fifth round, 148th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2010-11 and went on to play 987 regular-season games over his career, scoring 81 goals and 97 assists for a total of 178 points.

Known for his strong physical play and ability to deliver hits, Martin set an NHL record for most hits in a single season during the 2011-12 campaign and remained one of the league’s top hitters for many years. He spent the majority of his career with the Islanders, with a two-year stint at the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2016 to 2018, before returning to the Islanders and eventually retiring in 2025.

After finishing his playing days, Martin immediately transitioned to a new role in hockey: on June 24, 2025, he officially announced his retirement and accepted a position as Special Assistant to the General Manager of the Islanders.
